3.2 The visiting medical officer must monitor a pregnant prisoner’s health monthly during the first trimester, fortnightly during the second trimester and weekly during the third trimester. Any serious medial concerns must be reported to the officer in charge, who must ensure that medical treatment is provided when necessary.
3.3 Pregnant women must not be directed to work 2 months prior to and 3 months after delivery.
3.4 When a prisoner gives birth inside the prison, a visiting medical officer must attend the birth.
3.5 If a prisoner gives birth inside the prison the place of birth shall not be recorded as a prison on the child’s registration of birth.
3.6 While a child or children are accommodated with the mother in prison the mother is responsible for the care and safety of such child/ren.
3.7 When allocating work duties, the officer in charge must ensure that the child/ren’s mother has sufficient time to adequately provide for the care and safety of the child/ren.
3.8 The officer in charge must ensure that the child/children residing in prison are provided with the appropriate support in accordance with Commissioner’s Order No 020.
3.9 When a prisoner is unable to adequately care for her or his child/ren in the prison for any reason, the officer in charge, after making reasonable efforts to assist the prisoner in giving adequate care, must arrange with the appropriate Government agency or family member, for the child/ren’s care outside the prison.
3.10 In the event that a child is removed from the prison, the officer in charge will provide a comprehensive report to the Commissioner.
3.11 A child accommodated in the prison may leave and return to the prison with the approval of the officer in charge in the company of an approved person. Every effort will be made to ensure that the child has regular contact with family members.
3.12 Children may be searched by a female corrections officer or visiting medical officer in the company of their mother.
3.13 When a child reaches the age of 6 years, the officer in charge will facilitate the removal of that child from the prison. A suitable care provider will be nominated in consultation with the mother and family members and/or relevant Government agency representatives.
3.14 In the event of a child dying while accommodated in the prison, the officer in charge will act in accordance with Commissioner’s Local Order No 018.
