4.1 Visits to remand prisoners shall occur between 9.00 am to 11.00 am on Saturdays.
4.2 Visits to convicted prisoners shall occur between 9.00 am to 11.00 am and 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm on Saturdays.
4.3 The officer in charge must assist the official visitor in whatever way he or she can.
4.4 Legal and police visits shall be permitted in accordance with Commissioner’s Order No 017.
4.5 A low security prisoner serving the last 12 months of an effective sentence, who has received no visits for 12 months, may be transferred to the prison nearest to his or her home.
4.6 The Visit Supervisor must make sure that a ‘Visitors to Prisoners Register’ is maintained and the following details recorded—
  • (a)the name and address of the visitor;
  • (b)the name and number of the prisoner visited;
  • (c)the date and time of the visit;
  • (d)in the case of a professional visit, the purpose of the visit (ie, legal, police, welfare etc); and
  • (e)the relationship of the visitor to the prisoner.
4.7 If the Visit Supervisor believes that there is a threat to institutional security or safety, a visitor may be denied permission to visit a prisoner.
4.8 In the event that a visitor is denied permission to visit, the reason and details of the prisoner and visitor will be recorded in the ‘Visitors to Prisoners Register’.
4.9 If the Visit Supervisor believes that there is a threat to security or safety, visits can be suspended and the officer in charge shall be advised.
4.10 A prisoner may have up to 3 visitors visiting at any one time.
4.11 High and medium security prisoners must be strip searched in accordance with Commissioner’s Local Order No 006 before and after each visit.
4.12 Corrections Service officers are to observe the prisoners and their visitors at all times to ensure that trafficking of prohibited items does not occur.
4.13 If a Corrections Service officer suspects that prohibited items have been passed, the visit is to be terminated and the prisoner immediately removed and strip searched.
